Why I love Le Creuset Skillets:

One of the small changes I suggest doing that makes a BIG difference in health and lessens the amount of toxins you are exposed to is switching out your non-stick cookware with more healthy options when you are able.

 

You see, in two to five minutes on a conventional stovetop, cookware coated with non-stick surfaces can exceed temperatures at which the coating breaks apart and emits toxic particles and gases. Do you remember hearing about the sudden deaths of pet birds exposed to heating cookware made with perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs)? A pet bird can die within seconds of exposure, which is just one example of how strong and dangerous these chemicals can be (source). As you cook with these pots and pans, you are breathing in the same harmful chemicals! They also leach toxins right into the food we’re eating. 

 

So what can you do? Opt for non-toxic, healthy cookware options like enameled cast iron, stainless steel, cast iron, glass, or ceramic. If you are on a tight budget and can’t make the switch from non-stick just yet, let me suggest a few things you can do while you save up for healthy cookware:

• Cook your food on the lowest possible temperature. Remember, it’s high temperatures that cause the coating to break down and release toxic chemicals. 
• Use your exhaust fan whenever cooking.
• Throw out any nonstick cookware that is chipped, scratched or damaged. These pieces directly leach chemicals into your food.
• Never put your non-stick skillet into the oven! The temperatures get too high in the oven, which causes the coating to break down and off gas harmful chemicals. 

 

Once the budget allows, consider the cookware piece(s) that you use the most and start by switching out those first. The beauty of  healthy cookware is that it lasts forever – the pieces can become treasured family heirlooms!

 

Through the years, I’ve heard about Le Creuset cookware and how nice they were, but holy cow, have you seen the price tag on those babies?! 

 

I never seemed to be able to pull the trigger and buy a Le Creuset skillet for myself so instead I gazed at them longingly while I opted for more budget friendly, healthy cookware options like stainless steel and cast iron (I have THIS stainless steel set and THIS cast iron set). Those are great options if you know how to use them properly – there is definitely a learning curve if you’re a newbie to them.

 

So you can imagine my delight when I was gifted a Le Creuset Skillet just a few months ago. I was giddy!  And after the first time using it, I fell in love. It’s enameled cast iron, which is like the best of both worlds. I can clean it with soap and it’s even dishwasher safe. It’s safe for high temperature cooking and the enamel makes it resistant to sticking. And they come in fun colors and that’s a big bonus in my colorful world 🙂 I got the caribbean color – it’s my favorite color and matches my kitchen perfectly. I am so excited to be able to gift 2 people this wonderful skillet in your favorite color! I hope you love it, use it and treasure it as much as I do.
