How To Increase Libido Naturally
(for Women & Men)
Are you one of the millions of women or men who are experiencing low sex drive?
Prescription drugs for increasing sex drive and balancing hormones come with a big dose of short and long term consequences. The truth is, there are very effective ways to increase libido naturally! These natural remedies that boost sex drive are well documented to increase pleasure, stimulate blood flow, balance hormones, increase libido and nourish the reproductive system.
Best natural ways to increase libido:
Maca Root for Boosting Libido
Maca Root is a nutty and caramel tasting powder. It’s well documented to increase libido, give sexual stamina, balance hormones, increase energy and help with vaginal dryness, hot flashes, insomnia and even anxiety and depression. Maca root contains a wide array of vitamins, essential minerals and amino acids. Because my husband and I have both felt noticeable benefits from taking maca root, we use it daily. We add 2 teaspoons to our daily smoothie. We use THIS kind.
Horny Goat Weed also known as “Natural Viagra”
I am totally serious! Horny Goat Weed is a real thing (it’s a plant). And it really works! Some Chinese medicine doctors even call Horny Goat Weed, “the very best sexual tonic for both men and women.” It’s been used for increasing sexual pleasure for over 2,000 years and it’s increasing in popularity all over the world because of its effectiveness. It’s recommended for increasing libido in both men and women and for improving male sexual function (it’s often referred to as “the natural Viagra”). It’s also widely used to relieve symptoms of PMS and menopause. I recommend this one. You can also read more about Horny Goat Weed here – because if you’re anything like me, you’re probably very curious about it! A bottle of Horny Goat Weed makes a really fun (and funny) Valentine’s Day gift, too 😉
Passion Flower for Boosting Sex Drive
Passion Flower is a flower that got its name for its sex boosting abilities! It’s an aphrodisiac that contains a well-known natural chemical called chrysin, which boosts sex drive. Passion Flower also helps relax and relieve stress, anxiety and tension. It’s commonly infused in a tea. I use this passion flower tea. I often drink it before bed and it helps me relax and sleep, too!
Liver Pills for Hormones and Libido
I was introduced to liver pills about 4 years ago and I can’t say enough good things about what liver did for me and my hormones. My hormones were so out of whack and I attribute the liver for being a major player in balancing my hormones. Liver from healthy animals contains more nutrients, gram for gram, than any other food. The abundant doses of bio-available vitamin A,D and K in liver all contribute to optimum hormone production. Since I shared my story in THIS blog post, women of all ages (and a few men, too!) have written in to tell me that liver pills have given them a sex life again and that they’ve majorly helped boost libido. I love hearing that they are working so well for so many others! I get my liver pills here (or you can make your own very easily — HERE is my blog post where I show you how to do it).
Ashwaganda for Sexual Health and Hormones
Ashwaganda is an adaptogenic herb has been used for centuries to promote sexual health, increase libido, balance hormones, and nourish the reproductive system. It’s commonly known to increase blood flow to the sexual organs, creating a more intense sexual experience. Ashwaganda is also well known to alleviate anxiety and stress. It can be taken in capsules or tea. I use these Ashwaganda capsules.
Shatavari (for women) for Nourishing the Reproductive System
Shatavari is a commonly used herb in Ayurvedic medicine to enhance sexual desire and to nourish the female reproductive system. It’s used for helping PMS, hormone imbalances, menopause symptoms and PCOS. Many holistic doctors agree that it’s a herb females should take from menstruation through all phases of menopause. Shatavari features natural, plant-based phyto-estrogens which support and promote normal and healthy hormonal and reproductive functions. It’s commonly known to support fertility, as well. THIS is the Shatavari I recommend.
Is low libido a hormone problem?
Although low libido or sexual difficulty is often diagnosed (or many would say misdiagnosed) as a hormonal issue, you may be surprised to learn what has the biggest overall impact on your sexuality……
Your perception of yourself!
And this has little to do with age or the number on your scale. If you believe you are sexy and sensual, you will be, no matter what your age or body shape. Let go of your body shame and your perception that you’re too old, too fat or not sexy enough. Start believing the truth of who you are – a powerful, sexy, and sensual being.
We’re wired for sensual pleasure! You can enjoy your sexuality well into your 60’s, 70’s and beyond (research even shows that older women have far better sex lives than younger women. And no you don’t need a partner to enjoy sensual pleasure).
Also, if you haven’t checked out my simple, natural Homemade Lubricant Recipe, HERE it is. It’s been extremely popular over the years and I’m glad so many people are enjoying it 😉
I hope some of these natural herbs and suggestions will help you get your groove back! They really do work!

Great article Kelly and very informative as always! I was wondering what products to try first or should one just start them all at once? And if you could only pick only 2-3 products, which would you go with? I have so many things I have added to my routine that I am running out of room to store it all and have problems getting them all down and done! LOL Low Libido and hormone issues are my problem….UGH started menopause after 18 years of peri-menopause.
I know what you mean, Kari! My top 3 are shatavari, liver pills and maca. I have taken all of the supplements I mentioned in the blog post when I was dealing with my hormone issues, but I rotated them so that I was only taking 2-3 supplements at a time. I started with liver pills, maca and shatavari. And then when the shatavari ran out, I bought the ashwaganda. Make sense? Sometimes our body really responds to a particular supplement over another and rotating them like that will let you see which one(s) your body responds to the best. Hormone issues are no fun!!!
I just saw a recipe for the lubricating cream – do you know if the oil used in it would burn? I’m really sensitive because of menopause and hormone issues. I ordered the oil and plan to make the cream. Great article and very helpful comments!
Hi Maria! The coconut oil in the homemade lubricant is so nourishing to the skin and the sensual essential oil blend is very gentle and does not burn at all. If you had any concerns, you could always leave the essential oil out and just use regular coconut oil (just plain coconut oil makes a really great lubricant!). If you did that you could still use the sensual essential oil by diffusing it or putting a drop on your pillow 🙂
Seriously, you are so awesome. Awesome recommendations plus tying it into the big picture at the end. My boyfriend loves when he sees me reading posts like this one, lol. 🙂 I think I’m going to buy that horny weed and make the lubricant as part of a Valentine’s Day treat for him!!
I love your comments, Hanna! <3
Kelly
I am already doing some nutritional healing as well with a nutritionist but he is helping me first with AFatigue and
Then the hormones is next. But this cream will hopefully help so much – thanks for this valuable information.
I’m so glad to read that you are on the path to healing, Maria! It sounds like you are in great hands! Wishing you the best!
Great post! And agree with your reply to Kari about not needing to use everything at once and maybe rotating things. It’s amazing all the good things liver can do! And I have a package of maca. Thought maybe I could blend it into my coffee in the am (along with the coconut oil, ghee and collagen!!!)
I love the taste of maca, Elizabeth. It’s a little nutty, a little vanilla-y, a little caramel-y and a little sweet. I think it would be so good in a coffee beverage!
Great post! I use Shatavari and I love it! I read it’s good for sex drive and PMS mood swings. Yes and yes it does both! I put 1/2 a teaspoon in warm milk sometime with coconut oil or butter. It’s really great!!!
Yes, shatavari is the bomb! And wow, Michelle, I never even thought to put it in a warm beverage – thank you for that tip. Very excited to give that a try!
Is the Maca Root safe to take while pregnant or nursing? Also how long does the bag usually last you?
Hi Blair! I checked one of my herbal reference books (THIS one) and maca gets the safest rating possible (a class 1A herb). To quote the book “No identified concerns for use during pregnancy or lactation.” WebMD also says that in Peru, “maca has been a staple in the diet of men, women, children, infants, pregnant and lactating women, elderly, and the infirm.” (source)
I usually get a 16 ounce bag and it lasts 2 of us for about 2 months. I think the one I linked to in my post is out of the 16 ounce bag and for some reason the price of their 8 ounce bag is crazy high (I think it must be an Amazon mistake because I never paid anywhere near that much for it!) so if you were looking for another great, high quality brand, HERE is another one that I’ve used in the past and like.
Just wondering which ones I can take while breast feeding? I needs some major labido help. Look forward to hearing answers, also I’ve tried maca powder before and the one I tasted was so disgusting no matter what I put it in.
You could put the maca into capsules and just take it that way. Shatavari is also safe for breastfeeding.
In your research did it every say that maca can mess with your birth control pills?
Dear Kelly, please continue this article as future series if possible /on hormonal balance/ , so many of us need help and wisdom in this area! Huge thank you!
Thank you so much for your suggestion, Jane. Hormonal imbalances are so common and I would love to help the best way I can. I will work on this.
I’m 24 and am reall having issues with low libido. Would you recommend that I start the Maca root ? I’m not sure if it’s an hormonal imbalance but they did just do lab work today. So I’ll know soon I guess.
I think that would be a great place to start, Cindy. I hope the lab work can provide you with some answers! Take care!
I bought sunestron for my boyfriend because his sex drive has declined and he has no energy to go to the gym. Just with a week of using Sunestron supplement I’ve seen a drastic improvement in his sex drive and he has energy to go to the gym!
Thanks for the tip, Jill!
Hi,
I would like to try meca, liver, Shatavari and collagen. I want less joint pain, better digestion, better skin, weight loss, less depression, less pms and premenopausal symptoms and a helluva lot more sex drive!!! That’s not a lot to ask, right??? 🙂
Can I take all together or do I need to rotate and how would I do that if necessary? Thank you!
I like the way you think! And you’ll laugh because that’s exactly the combo I’m taking right now (great minds!!)! I put maca and collagen (and matcha, too) in my morning smoothie and then take the liver and shatavari at lunch. It’s working really well for me so that’s what I’ve been sticking to 🙂
Hi Kelly! I just had a quick question, is there another site that you would recommend to get liver pills from? The link you gave on your post for Amazon says those pills are not in stock and apparently they don’t know when they will be back in stock 🙁 I’m very interested in trying these as I am having horrible hormonal issues along with ovarian cysts giving me a problem too. I am trying to naturally take care of all this as my body does not respond well to birth control and no GYN seems to want to help me because I am 24 years old. It’s been rough! Thank you so much for this post too, it’s definitely helped educate me on what else I can do to help myself! I look forward to your response! 😀
Hi Madeline! I hear you and I’m so sorry you are going through this with not a lot of support right now :/ I’ve been there, too and it’s not so fun. I have a feeling you’ll be getting a lot of the right support in the very near future because it sounds like you’ve taken some matters into your own hands 🙂
I get my liver pills from Vital Proteins now! http://www.vitalproteins.com/beauty/pasture-raised-grass-fed-beef-beef-liver-capsules-120-count.html?acc=ca46c1b9512a7a8315fa3c5a946e8265 (I have a Vital Proteins coupon code for 10% off and free shipping, too! PRIMALLYINSPIRED10)
Sending you a lot of support and healing <3
I just reread this article and realized you got pregnant during this time. 🙂 So happy for you both!
I didn’t realize that, Janet…that’s really funny! 🙂 I’ve been taking ashwaganda (my favorite!) for a few years now and I’ve often heard it called “the fertility pill” by numerous people. That must of been one of the reasons why it was so easy to get pregnant!
