It’s the beginning of October here in Pennsylvania. For me that means cool, crisp weather, breathtakingly beautiful scenery (the rolling hills and colorful trees in Pennsylvania are SO gorgeous this time of year!), pumpkin pie, hoodies, blankets and boots. But for most of the guys in my life, October means one thing: hunting season.
And for my husband Zach, hunting season means it’s beard time. Growing a beard each year is some sort of manly ritual with his hunting friends. They say a beard helps them hunt better (huh?? I never really understood that one) and helps keep them warm (I do understand that one).
But truth be told, I’ve never been a beard loving kind of gal. I mostly prefer a clean shaven face or even better yet, a tiny bit of stubble (stubble = sexy in my book).
To me, beards were itchy and coarse. And don’t even get me started on unkept beards. I don’t like unkept beards at all.
But I have come around! Well….not on the unkept beard. However, I’ve grown to actually like Zach’s hunting beard. Especially now that he’s learned the secret to keeping his beard nice and soft and since he’s so meticulous about keeping it well groomed.
He says the secret to his soft and groomed beard is beard oil. Plus the specific ingredients in this beard oil recipe keep his skin healthy and clear during the cooler months.
What does beard oil do?
So what’s the big deal about beard oil and why is it a good idea for a bearded person use it? A beard oil…
- Reduces itchiness
- Softens and conditions facial hair
- Eliminates dry skin and dandruff
- Stimulates the growth of healthy hair
- Polishes the look and finish of the beard
- Promotes healthy, clear skin
- Smells so sexy 🙂
DIY Beard Oil
In prior years, Zach purchased various beard oils from different companies. But this year he said he wanted to make his own homemade beard oil because he wasn’t entirely satisfied (mainly with the scents) and he thought there was a possibility that he could do better.
I said go for it! I answered a few of his questions since I’m usually the DIY expert, but then sat back and enjoyed watching him do his thing trying to create the perfect beard oil recipe complete with the perfect manly scent.
He tested a bunch of different facial oils and essential oil blends to come up with the perfect, easy beard oil recipe that smells AMAZING.
Beard Oil Ingredient Health Benefits
Avocado oil
Avocado oil is the base oil that made his top pick for this beard oil recipe. He said it feels very lightweight on the skin, absorbs quickly and easily and isn’t too greasy like some of the other beard oils he’s tried. And I say that avocado oil is an especially good choice because it’s absolutely wonderful for skin and hair health. Avocado oil is at the top of the list of foods containing the most amount of Vitamin E, making it exceptional for healthy skin and hair. We like using THIS avocado oil.
And the scent he formulated? Seriously, it’s the best manly essential oil blend I’ve smelled!
He was very picky about getting the scent just right and literally tried about 100 different combinations. What can I say….the man is thorough. My whole house smelled pretty crazy for a couple of days, but he was having so much fun so I didn’t stop him.
The scent he created is a little woodsy, a little earthy and so, so sexy! It’s also mild and not at all overpowering. I love it as much as he does. He’s even thinking about making his own cologne spray 🙂
He used a blend of vetiver, fir needle and cedarwood essential oils. Not only do those essential oils smell so sexy and manly when blended together, but they are filled with some pretty cool health promoting properties:
Vetiver essential oil
Vetiver is earthy and grounding. Many people with ADHD report overwhelming success with vetiver (including my niece – it’s been a lifesaver for her!). It’s also one of the best oils for scars and anti-aging! We use THIS one.
Fir needle essential oil
Fir needle smells like the great outdoors. It has soothing, stress relieving properties and is especially great for those prone to allergies, congestion and respiratory issues. It helps open airways for open, clear breathing. We like THIS one.
Cedarwood essential oil
Cedarwood is one of the top essential oils for skin and hair health. It stimulates healthy hair growth, eliminates dry, flaky skin and scalp and helps relieve acne. THIS variety of Cedarwood is the one we use (we think it smells the best out of all the different Cedarwood varieties).

To me, beards were itchy and coarse. And don’t even get me started on unkept beards. I don’t like unkept beards at all. NO YOU DID NOT SAY THIS LOL
Oddly good informations about beard oil from a “girl” who starts her post with such an anti beard statement.
beards are cool and trendy nowadays, even teens are looking forward to grow a beard and have the manlier look.
You know they say if your man has a beard, raise your hand. If he doesn’t raise your standards.
I myself a beard enthusiast blogging about teen beard find this post very helpful tbh i always recommend beard oil where i came from we use pure argan oil but it’s hard to get your hands on especially pure so a diy beard oil could be great (it does help with the itchy sensation)
Good luck
Heehee!
This is awesome, I think I’ll make some for my husband for Christmas! How long will this oil last for? If I were to make a bunch of bottles of it now would it save for a long time?
Hi Kathleen! Yes, this will last a long time – as long as the expiration date on the oil you used (typically 1-2 years or more if kept away from sunlight).
I’m just learning how to do all this. I’m a little nervous but looking forward to it.
Good luck, Laura!
Hi< i'm excited to make this for my dad for Father's Day and was wondering, all I have is an amber glass spray bottle, not a dropper, would it works as a spray as well?
yes!
Thank you for the “printable” page. I’m too lazy to write things down and I can’t remember what I had for breakfast. So, the ability to print everything is a plus, plus.
I’m making some for Christmas. What kind of labels did you use?
Hi Angela, I just used Avery’s 8×10 labels and cut them out. Hope all the guys love it! Take care!
