Best Homemade Play Dough with Natural Colors that’s Super Soft & Long Lasting
Good, old fashioned kid play always includes play dough, right?! Play dough is such a rich sensory and imaginative experience for children.
I have wonderful play dough memories like getting lost in my own little world and creating a whole bakery complete with fancy cakes, cupcakes and cookies. And now my toddler is doing the same! He requests to play with play dough a few times a week. I love watching him make play dough cookies and cupcakes for me in his little play kitchen.
Needless to say, we’ve tried a lot of natural homemade play dough recipes. But most of them haven’t quite hit the mark…until now!
If you are looking for the most silky soft, long lasting and the best homemade play dough recipe, here it is! Plus, this recipe contains no food dye or artificial colors – just simple, real superfood powders that many health conscious people already have in their cabinets like matcha and turmeric!

Best Homemade Play Dough Recipe:
- 1½ cups water
- ¾ cup salt (I use THIS salt)
- 1 tablespoon cream of tarter (I use THIS cream of tartar)
- 3 tablespoons coconut oil or olive oil
- 1½ cups flour (I use THIS flour)
- 1 teaspoon superfood powder in choice color (see recommendations below)
- Mix everything together in a medium pot over medium low heat. It will look very liquid-y at first. Also, don't worry about the lumps. The water will cook out and it will all smooth out as it cooks.
- Keep stirring as the water cooks out. Once the dough starts getting dry and is no longer gooey, it's done! This process only takes a few minutes.
Pink: Hibiscus powder or Dragonfruit powder
Yellow: Turmeric
Green: Spirulina for dark green, Matcha for light green
Blue: Blue Spirulina
Purple: Butterfly Pea Flower Powder
How Long Does Homemade Play Dough Last?
You can safely store this recipe in an airtight container (I use THESE containers) for up to a year. It will stay as silky soft and pliable as it was on the first day you made it! The salt inhibits bacteria and mold and keeps the play dough safe.
Why is Cream of Tartar used in Play Dough?
Cream of tarter (find HERE) is the secret ingredient to silky play dough that won’t crumble. It also makes the play dough very long lasting. Cream of tarter is highly recommended, but if you don’t have it and don’t wish to purchase it, that’s ok! Read below on what you can use instead.
What can I use instead of Cream of Tartar?
Cream of tartar is an acid and you must substitute it with an acid for this recipe to work well. Lemon juice and white vinegar can be used as a substitute.
There you have it! I hope this DIY natural play dough recipe invites many hours of fun and imaginative play!
