Chia Seed Drink Recipe: Strawberry Lemonade Mamma Chia Copycat
My toddler son, Sam, absolutely loves Mamma Chia drinks. They are just the right amount of sweetness, are fruity and have a fun, almost gel-like consistency from the chia seeds.
They really are delicious. My husband and I enjoy drinking them, too.
I’ve been making our own chia seed drinks for a few years now and have experimented with many flavors. Hands down, our favorite homemade version is strawberry lemonade. Below is my nutrient filled & super easy Mamma Chia Copycat Chia Drink Recipe that gets two thumbs way up from my toddler.
Benefits of Chia Seeds
Chia seeds are wonderful nutrition for the body. Rich in calcium, potassium, magnesium iron, zinc and many trace minerals, they are called a superfood by many nutritionists.
In fact, a gram for gram comparison shows that chia seeds contain:
- 8 times more Omega-3s than salmon
- 25% more fiber than flaxseed
- 2 times more potassium than bananas
- 6 times more calcium than milk
The chia’s soluble fiber forms a gel that slows the absorption of sugar into the bloodstream (especially great for diabetics!), binds it to toxins in the digestive system and helps eliminate waste. In other words, they can help make you regular in the bathroom department.
Chia Seed for Athletes
Chia seed drinks are especially popular for athletes and runners because of the quick energy, nutrition and hydration benefits. They are also a complete protein source.
Traditionally, chia was touted as a superfood and was even nicknamed the “The Runner’s Seed” because of the ability to help athletes maintain energy and hydration. It was said that one tablespoon of chia seed was capable of sustaining a Maya and Aztec warrior for up to 24 hours. Wow!
I just love those little chia seeds and the nutritional support they offer! They don’t have any flavor so you can add a teaspoon or two to virtually anything for a little added daily support. I use these organic chia seeds from Amazon.
Chia Seed Drink Recipe: Strawberry Lemonade Mamma Chia Copycat
- ½ cup fresh or frozen strawberries, sliced (about 5 strawberries)
- 1 tablespoon lemon juice (about ½ lemon)
- 2-3 teaspoons honey or sweetener of choice
- 2 tablespoons warm water
- 1 teaspoon chia seeds (I use THESE)
- Add everything, except chia seeds to a blender and blend until smooth.
- Stir in chia seeds.
- Set aside for at least 15 minutes so the chia seeds can hydrate (best if left refrigerated 2-3 hours or overnight). Enjoy!
This drink is especially refreshing in the warm months of the year. We make and enjoy it often in the spring and summer months. I hope you can try it, too! Enjoy!
